The entire concept of 3D printers really blows my mind. Even though I understand the concept, I have difficulty wrapping my head around it. The Economist does a good job of exploring the ramifications of it.
In the US, we have a rather odd conception of “blue collar.”
From HuffPo, a look at Joseph Caramadre: the guy who scammed loopholed insurance companies for millions. This is the sort of thing I typically disapprove of (not unlike walking away from a mortgage you can pay for) and yet I find myself oddly ambivalent in this case.
If you’re drafting a list of the most and least cultured cities in the country, and New Orleans comes at the bottom of your list, you need to rethink your criteria.
Thomas Jefferson, defender of the degenerates! I’ve heard this story before, but it’s something I don’t mind being reminded about.
Kent Newsome’s post on Facebook and politics is worthwhile. Since Blogspot hit the scene, anyone who wanted to spout off about politics could. What Facebook has done is make it a norm on more of a commons area.
When reading this story of a dog’s loyalty to his dead owner, I am torn between sadness and being touched. It makes me want to hug my dog, yet I know there is no chance my dog would never do this (and, of course, it’s possible that this dog didn’t exactly do this in the way described).
I hadn’t heard about this story: Minnesota State (Mankato) football coach Todd Hoffner was charged with two child pornography counts for taking videos of his kids acting goofy while unclothed. Some of the details (as described by prosecutors) are a bit unnerving, and perhaps an investigation of his home computers was warranted (they found no child pornography), but I don’t think I am on board with this prosecution. Would this be an issue if not for Jerry Sandusky?
Jasmeet Sidhu has a piece on gender-selection and IVF. That parents overwhelmingly prefer girls should be news, but it doesn’t fit into anybody’s narrative.

I would love to have a 3D printer. For some interesting speculation on 3D printers in a somewhat bleak future, I reccomend Cory Doctorow’s novel “Makers.” It’s a good book, and you can get an electronic version free.

Minnesota State
It is safe to say that Hayden, Luther, and Dauber would never be in a situation like this. Although I would have loved to have seen nude photos of Hayden’s daughter*.

I didn’t get that impression. If you feel comfortable, would you mind elaborating? (if not that’s ok too)
Look, it seems to me that this poor guy got caught up in a situation that probably isn’t a big deal. The problem is that everyone feels they have to err on the side of caution. If i was the IT guy I would have kept my mouth shut in the first place. Has Web ever squealed on a Southern Tech employee?
*Just to be clear she was college-aged
Interestingly, the university wasn’t called Minnesota State when that show came out. Recent appearances by the actor who plays Dauber makes me feel old.
The prosecution is saying that the videos included the kids mooning the camera and pulling out their butt-cheeks. If my kid did that, I don’t think I would keep that video.
If MSU had existed at the time of the show, they would have chosen something else. Plus MSU was always intended to be a D-I school. I just think of it as the University of Minnesota. The only real difference is that MSU was implied to be out in the mountains, while UofM is in the Twin Cities.
Yes Dauber has been playing Marshall’s father on HIMYM, even after they officially killed him off. His girlfriend Judy completely disappeared. And of course Hayden is now the partriarch on Parenthood.
As for what the prosecutor said, I will admit it sounds bad. However, we don’t know how much of it is hyperbole. At most, I think this coach is guilty of having poor judgement, which isn’t a crime yet. Oh, and misuse of university property.
The sad part is that even if he is found not guilty, this is the kind of thing that people don’t forget about.
It always bothered me that they used Gopher footage for the games. The part that bothered me being that it was an “M” and only an “M” on the helmet. It’s Minnesota STATE, so it should be MSU or something.
Then I moved to the Mountain West, and discovered that Montana State University’s helmet has… a solitary “M” (they also have the distinction of the website montana.edu instead of mtstate or something – The University of Montana is umt.edu. A lot of people looking for Iowa State’s website probably end up at Idaho State’s, as they have isu.edu.)
