I was going to write a post to ask if anyone knew of any great resources on the history of and constitutional restrictions on multi-member legislative districts in the United States. Before I could, however, I ran across this, which appears to be a rundown of everything I wanted to know. So if it’s a subject that interests you, have at it.

Can I ask what spurred your interest? Intellectual curiosity? Is there a big redistricting battle in your state? It is part of your novel?
I’m impressed that someone actually read it.
It’s for a novel. I have a fictitious state in mind with a distinct form of government set up to handle some of its cultural peculiarities. It involves multi-member districts, which I vaguely remembered being called unconstitutional at some point and yet one of the states I lived in had them. So I needed to look in to when they are permissible and when they are not. It was harder to find than I had anticipated. I had about given up for the night when I ran across this great write-up.
