An IM conversation between my coworker Pat and me.
wellpatr: Here’s what I don’t get. If Benoit was going to kill his wife and kid and himself, why do it over an entire weekend?
trumwill: Maybe he killed his kid cause he found out or was going to find out about his mom?
wellpatr: Could be, but if he was going to kill himself anyway why does it matter?
trumwill: It’s possible that he didn’t realize he had to kill himself until after he killed the kid.
wellpatr: He should have gone into this with a plan, decided who needed to die and why, and taken care of it in a much more efficient manner than he did.
trumwill: I think we may just have to accept the fact that when he killed his family and them himself, he may not have been in the most logical frame of mind.
wellpatr: Even so, the inefficiency is disturbing. It’s a good thing that he was a wrestler because he would make a lousy businessman.

The fact that he killed his wife and wiated the next day to kill his son, makes me think that steroids had nothing to do with it. I know that’s what the media is making it out to be but I would think that steroids would cause him to go bezerk and kill both of them close together rather than waiting. I think the guy was 1) just plain nuts or 2) a cold killer. Either way it’s a tragedy.
Yeah, it really doesn’t seem to be roid rage as we see it. I think Pat was trying to work from the assumption that roid rage was responsible for the first murder and then everything after that was panic. Could be.
I don’t know enough about the effects of steroids to know for sure, but they have been associated with an increase in aggressive behavior. In the Spectator Sin post Peter believes that it’s more a matter of aggressive people being more likely to take it. That could be, too, though I thought that it involved testosterone levels which would make someone more aggressive and less even-tempered in general. If so, while the steroids can’t be blamed (as they presumably could be in roid rage), they can be a contributing factor.
According to the Winnipeg Sun he had been increasingly psychologically unstable for some time. Whether that had to do with the persistent drug usage is uncertain.
I think he knew he “had to” kill the kid as soon as he killed his wife, but it took him a day to work up the nerve. And maybe he wanted to have one little bit of last nice time with the kid; let him eat snack foods and play video games before the end. He could have killed the wife in a fit of rage, or he could have had a delusional psychosis that lasted all weekend.
